According to Alex from Wedlock, Buddha hand Citrus Medica var. sarcodactylis, or the fingered citron, is a tropical rain forest fruit segmented into finger-like sections seen on representations of the Buddha, very popular in far east. The original of this kind of citron can be traced to East or South Asia, northern India or China. The small tree with long irregular branches covered in thorns, with oblong leaves and pale green and grow about four to six inches, with white flowers tinted purplish from the outside and grow in fragrant clusters. The fruit’s fingers contain only the white part of the fruit and can have acidic pulp. Buddha’s hand fruit is also a religious offering Buddhist temples, and are very fragrant and used predominantly in China and Japan for perfuming rooms and personal items such as clothing. In China the Buddha’s hand fruit is a symbol of happiness, longevity, and good fortune and an ideal New Year’s gift.
