India held their nerve under the immense expectation to beat South Africa by 52 runs to clinch their first-ever Women’s World Cup at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. After three straight defeats in the group stage India’s turnaround was absolutely dramatic.
Part-time spinner, Shafali Verma playing because opener Partika Rawal was injured, struck gold removing Sume Luus with her second ball and Marizanne Kapp with her seventh effectively halting South Africa’s chase.
Amanjot’s tumbling catch ends Wolvaardt’s charge after scoring a magnificent 101. With 78 needed, Wolvaardt went for broke, as she lofted hit off Deepti Sharma which Amanjot Kaur, sprinted in, juggled twice and finally clung on to send India roaring. Wolvaardt stood between India and victory. Jemimah Rodrigues 127, steered India past a record target against their long-time rival- the Australia who had Thwarted India’s ICC dreams for over a decade.
Deepti Sharma ended the tournament as its leading wicket taker.
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said she’d gone with her gut having smashed 87, Ver,a took home the Player of the Match award.
A Women’s World Cup which saw Laura Wolvaardt of South Africa ( 571 with average 71.37) scoring 169 and Marizanne Kapp ripped through England batters bowling out for 69 with 5-20, as South Africa dominated in Guwahati .
