World Biryani Day 2025 celebrated on July 7th, globally adored dish that brings people together, was introduced by Daawat, on the first Sunday of July 2022.

Delicious Biryani is a mixed rice dish originating in South Asia, traditionally made with rice, meat ( Chicken or goat,, Lamb, Beef) or seafood (Prawns, lobsters or fish), spices, complex blend of flavours and aromas. One Legend has it that the Turk-Mongol conqueror, Timur brought the precursor to the biryani to India in 1398 – earthen pots full of rice, spices and available meats would be buried in a hot pit, before being dug up and served to soldiers. Another legend has it that the dish was brought to the southern Malabar coast of India by Arab traders who were frequent visitors there,   Biryani came from Persia and brought to India by the Mughals but central Asia where the Mughals come from does not grow any rice or spices. There are records of a rice dish known as Oon Soru (rice, ghee, meat, turmeric, coriander, pepper, and bay leaf) in Tamil literature as early as the year 2 A.D. used to feed military warriors. There are also story that traces the origins of the dish to Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan’s beauty queen who inspired the Taj Mahal.

Biryani is a truly tasty way to enjoy a curry and I CAN believe it could have crossed over to Indian food culture from Persia as India and Persia during the Mughal reign were sometimes very closely aligned. Just a note – if you choose Biryani on a menu in an Asian restaurant, you will pay less than ordering a curry and a side dish of rice as the Biryani combines all together. It is definitely a dish I enjoy but I do like the sauce to be a bit liquid so the dish is not dry. I know a local restaurant which serves Biryani with a “pastry” topper in a bowl – probably a chapati or naan style bread. Reading this article makes my mouth water and thanks for sharing!

    Bon Appetit!
