England lost three wickets, Zak Crawley (0), Ben Duckett (25) and Joe Root (6) in the second innings before close as India set up a chase of 608 at Edgbaston on day for four.
Crawley lashed out in the second over to be caught for a duck and Duckett hit five boundaries before being bowled by Akash Deep for a 15-ball 25.
Earlier Indian captain Gill followed his epic 260 in the first innings with a dismissive 161 which enabled India to declare on 427-6 and became the first player to record scores in excess of 250 and 150 in the same Test. The new ball after tea allowed Deep to find significant movement later on, when the ball has gone soft batting has looked far easier. England tactics is critical.
For England to win this Test they have to beat the highest chase in Test history 418, which leaves for the draw or let India level the series 1-1 before the Lord’s next week.
