England lose series after Sharma’s stunning 135

England slumped to their heaviest-ever T20 defeat, as Abhishek Sharma’s chanceless, shocking 135 off 54 deliveries, hitting 13 of India’s 19 sixes, seven, in their mammoth total of 247 for 9, aided India to wrap up a 4-1 series victory in Mumbai’ Wankhede Stadium.

This was the second highest total England have conceded in T20s, despite Phil Salt smashing 55 off 23 balls, although the tourist folded for 97 in only 10.3 overs to lose by 150 runs. The previous worst was by 90 runs twice.

Brydon Carse claimed three for 38, Mark Wood two for 32. India added only 104 in the lost ten overs after being 143 for 2 at halfway, having been inserted by Jos Buttler who won the toss again. The only game England could win was the Rajkot match.

India’s Varun Chakaravarthy, who won the player of the series said, “This is the best I’ve bowled, but there’s also a lot of scope to improve. There were a few close balls I shouldn’t have bowled too. I didn’t take them granted because they’re a top side, it’s just about bowling the right ball at the right time- that’s what I was working on”.

Buttler said “We’re disappointed to lose the series. We’ve done some things well, there are some things we want to improve upon, but we’ve got to keep committing to the style of cricket we want to play – just execute better.”
