India had to wait 13 years to win T20 World Cup after beating South Africa in thriller by 7 runs.
The Proteas needed 26 runs from 24 balls chasing 177, but the vital wicket of Heinrich Klaasen for 52 from 37 balls swung the game in India’s favour. Arshdeep Singh crucially conceded only four runs from the penultimate over, leaving Hardik Pandya to defend 16 from the last over. Dave Miller was sensationally caught by Suryakumar Yadav at long-off for 21st on the first ball of the last over as India secured a sensational win.
Earlier Indian superstar Virat Kohli’s 76 off 59 propelled India to 176-7. This is India’s second T20 title, having won the inaugural tournament in 2007, and first World Cup win in either format since 2011 50-over competition.
Indian legends Rohit Sharma (37) and Virat kohli (35) are number one and two respectively on the all-time list of T20 international run scores, have retired from T20 internationals following their World Cup triumph in Barbados. Kohli ends with 4,188 runs from 125 T20 internationals, just behind Rohit Sharma’s 4,231 from 159, with five centuries, recorded shared with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell.
