“CICAVERZUM” OR “CAT CALL” BY ROZALIA SZELECZKI
A film which defies you not to laugh, cry, and sit up and take notice!
Very especially suited to cat lovers, “Cat Call” has been described and interpreted both as a Rom-Com and as “author driven drama”. It’s a moving, partly surrealistic and sensitively humorous saga which is presented in a way which makes it realistic and credulous though deep down most viewers
know that much of it is a playful fiction done in a style which keeps the audience enchanted and fixated.
“Cat Call” or “Cicaverzum” (Hungarian for Alternative Universe) is the debut feature of Rozalia Szeleczki – Hungarian “film stress” and it follows three shorts by her. The film is part of the Hungarian Incubator Programme. The story stars Fani (Franciska Torocsik) a 30 your old single female architect, and Mihaly (Csaba Polar) along with other stylish actors who play back up roles including Fani’s mother and friends, and the personalities at Fani’s architecture office. But I don’t know the name of the wonderful black cat who is a real cat and becomes the surrogate boyfriend of Fani who has PTSD and cannot make normal relationships with men. More information on this subject could be a spoiler so wait until you see the film. The successful filming of the cat in very many poses and places must have been a test for the cameramen but somehow they created and wove a story where the cat was a star of the story and performed wonderfully. Awesome!
Rather than Disney, we have a saga which crosses boundaries and what we would normally relate to reality, but we fall in love with the characters and are rooting for them throughout.
For originality alone “Cat Call” is a winner. I feel sure there is a hidden story to root out about how this fascinating narrative came about. In any event…
ENJOY.
