Writer of this play – Van Badham is an Australian born lady and an
international award winning writer, theatre maker and broadcaster who is a
featured Guardian columnist and has also written for the New York Times,
Bloomberg, The Daily Telegraph and The Age. She was Writer in Residence at
London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for 2 years and the first Australian
included in the New York Summer Play Festival.
Denmark is a country relatively unique in its popularity with high taxes but
excellent treatment for all who live there and a finger on the pulse attitude to
social justice and healthcare for all dwellers. One of the play’s characters is
the librarian Anne Toft played by a real Danish actress – Maja Simonsen who
has several play and film credits to her name including The Wheel of Time,
Sexy Beast and Emily in Paris. The play partly examines the relatively laid back
yet highly modern behaviour of Danes in current times, when love comes
knocking.
Other lead parts are divided between Tom Kay (Jake Newhouse) and Rebecca
Blackstone (Ishtar Madigan) and more stage presence incorporates James Jop
(Toby Bello) and Jodie Tyack (Dr Denyse Kim). All thespians in the production
have glowing resumes.
What transpires in this one hour forty minute play is a bang up to date style
comedy about love, lust, trolling and the people who live with it and
experience ‘outside the box’ issues with it. It seems to aim to surprise and
shock but also to endear and create harmony and even in some ways,
identification with the affairs of the heart or at some moments affairs of lust

over love can come together to make the audience feel sentimental and happy
about how couples come together or not as the case may be. To try and
describe more than this about Banging Denmark is futile – just try and go see
the play! No further spoilers allowed! I just hope this makes people curious to
see this production!
