An engrossing dramatic look back not long ago to a time of crisis which affected us all Worldwide.
“JAB” – The world premiere by James McDermott at The very famous Finborough Theatre, 118 Finborough Road, London SW10 9ED. Running until and including Saturday 16 March. http: // Finborough Theatre.co.uk. Directed by Scott Le Crass.
This emotional and eye popping play was written by the talented James McDermott about his very own parents and is set in lockdown. The couple – Anne and Don have been together for 29 years and Anne is an NHS worker and has been the main breadwinner and Don – most of the time – has been a stay at home parent though their children have now “flown the nest”.
The incredibly talented cast of two consists of Kacey Ainsworth and Liam Tobin and is clearly set in the North with background songs mainly from The Eurythmics. Both actors have a long list of plays and TV appearances behind them – Kacey having studied at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Liam having appeared in very many plays and including several popular British soaps.
The agile pair engross the audience with their relationship – at turns difficult and abusive, at other turns loving and giving, continuously “held together” by a glass or two of wine as they endure the effects of Covid. Though they represent slightly older people, they are both agile and in some cases even slightly juvenile which one can interpret as due to their long lasting relationship.
I think I am right in saying that the word “Covid” does not get mentioned in the script – you will be given a free copyrighted script nicely presented included in your programme.
I won’t be a spoiler to tell you any more about the plot. Playwright James McDermott has a long list of credits and also lectures and teaches for The National Theatre and Arvon, and University of East Anglia.
Director Scott Le Crass directed the revival of Martin Sherman’s Rose starring Maureeen Lipman and amongst other achievements has been shortlisted for Best Creative West End Debut at the Stage Awards. Scott is just about to direct “Toxic” by Nathaniel Hall at HOME, Manchester.
