Volcano erupted for the third time in the Reykjanes peninsula since December, with lava flowing near crucial pipelines close to the Svartsengi power station. Aerial video reveals a new 3km(1.8m) long fissure, a crack in the Earth’s surface -spraying streams of lava high up into the air. Smoke could be seen in the capital, Reykjavik, 25 miles away. Twenty Thousand people have been urged to limit their hot water and electricity use as the pipes could take days to rectify, even the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s top tourist attraction has been forced to close. Volcanologist Dr £vgenia Ilyinmskaya said hot water pipes going to 30, 000 people across the peninsula are at immediate risk, although the hope was the speed of the lava flow would soon slow down.
Iceland has 33 active volcano systems and sit over Mid-Atlantic Ridge the boundary between two of the largest tectonic plates on the planet.
