Ben Stokes staggering century  and support from Stuart Broad, chasing 371, was in vain as Australia managed second-Test victory at Lord’s in one of the most incredible controversial finishes in the history of the game.

Believing the ball to be dead, Bairstow wandered out of his ground as Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey under-armed the ball at stumps, and was eventually given out by TV umpire Marais Erasmus. As Bairstow departed kicking himself, Lord’s showered Australia with boos that would last for the rest of the day – some players were confronted by spectators in the Long Room. Stokes channelled his frustration into some stunning hitting, hammering 38 runs from the next 16 balls he faced after Bairstow dismissal and clubbing Cameron Green for three sixes to reach his century. Stokes, who was dropped on 77, and twice on 114, made Australia pay with a total of nine maximums- a record for an Ashes innings.

The Marylebone Cricket Club has suspended three members over altercations with Australian players at Lord’s on last day of the second test and an investigation is launched saying “ We maintain that the behaviour of a small number of members was completely unacceptable and whilst there was no suggestion by Australian captain Pat Cummins in post-match press conference that there was any physical altercation, it remains wholly unacceptable to behave in such a way, which goes against the values of the club’.

Tempers flared after Carey threw down the stumps to dismiss Bairstow, who left his crease after seemingly believing the ball was dead at the end of the 52nd over in England’s second innings. Australian players were booed and players from both sides exchanged words as they walked off the field at lunch before Khawaja and Warner appeared to be confronted by members.

Cricket motto should be “Play Hard, Play flair, accept Umpire’s decision”.

Both sides regroup for the third Test at Headingley on Thursday.
