Roadmap for India

India is at a crossroads today, its growth rate, while respectable relative to other large countries, is too low for jobs for youth, need intense competition in low-skilled manufacturing increasing protectionism globally and growing automation, make the situation still more difficult. India broke away from the standard development path from agriculture to low-skilled manufacturing, then high-skilled manufacturing and finally services, a long time back by leapfrogging the intermediate steps.  Raghuram Rajan, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Rohit Lamba, an economist at Pennsylvania State University explain  how we can accelerate economic development by investing in people , … Continue reading Roadmap for India

Tudor historian John Guy, teams up with his wife and fellow historian Julia Fox to provide an insight into the relationship  between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Anne was shrewder and more powerful than Henry who was more sensitive and vulnerable. Their story is one of the most remarkable in history a long courtship followed by shotgun wedding and then a coronation, ending just short of three years later when a husband’s passion turned to such hatred that he simply wanted his wife gone.  Anne and Henry’s relationship was tied almost completely to the major events of international politics at … Continue reading Exhilarating portrait of love, lust, politics, intrigue, betrayal and power

Taxes the time of all but the elite

Time has been defined and controlled by the powerful, but we can reclaim control  as shown by pioneering economist Guy Standing . The Ancient Greeks organised time into five categories: Work, labour, recreation, leisure and contemplation. Labour was onerous, whereas leisure was schole, and included participation in public life and lifelong education. Since the industrial revolution, our time has been shaped by capitalism, our jobs are supposed to provide all meaning in life, our time outside labour is considered simply “time off”, and politicians prioritise jobs above all other aspects of a good life. Today, we are experiencing the age … Continue reading Taxes the time of all but the elite

Rise & fall US corporate giants transition from a capitalist to Managerial society

Alhtough that of course did not happen, many of those once-admired corporates have not survived the destruction that swept through US business … Continue reading Rise & fall US corporate giants transition from a capitalist to Managerial society
