Canadian Photographer Patricia Homonylo scooped “The Bird Photographer of the Year Award” for her image titles When Worlds Collide, taken in Toronto which beat more than 23, 000 entries. The photograph showing more than 4, 000 birds that died colliding with windows and other reflective surfaces in the city. Homonylo said “ Each year more than one billion birds die in North America alone due to collisions with windows. I’m a conservation photojournalist and have been working with the Fatal Light Awareness Program, where we save window-collision survivors in Toronto. Sadly most of the birds we find are already de3ad. They are collected and at the end of year we create this impactful display to honour the lives lost and increase public awareness”.

14-year-old, Spanish photographer, Andres Luis Dominguez Blanco won the Young Bird Photographer of the Year 2024 for his nuthatch scrambling down an oak tree.

Wonderfully interesting story accompanying the winning photograph though very sad for the injured or dead birds. One wonders how the collection was made to execute the photograph.
The Junior prize winning picture is stunning and must have taken quite a few shots to get the perfect result so full of charm and colour and also peacefulness and harmony in a fractured world.
